To parents of children in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2: As your child progresses through primary education, it's natural to be interested in the curriculum they're engaging with.
Key Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2, ages 5-7) and Key Stage 2 (Years 3-6, ages 7-11) follow a structured curriculum designed to provide a broad and balanced foundation for future learning. The core subjects of English, Mathematics, and Science form the cornerstone of this foundation, complemented by a range of foundation subjects including History, Geography, Art, Music, Design & Technology, Computing, and Physical Education (PE) as well as PSHE and Religious Education. Many schools also introduce Languages during Key Stage 2. Religious Education (RE) is a statutory subject, with content determined at the local level.
English focuses on developing reading comprehension, writing proficiency (including grammar and punctuation), and effective communication skills. Mathematics builds foundational numerical skills, encompassing addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and geometry. Science encourages exploration and understanding of the natural world through topics such as plants, animals, materials, and forces. The foundation subjects expand upon these core areas, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and a broader understanding of the world and its diverse cultures. History provides a chronological understanding of the past, Geography explores our planet and its environments, Art & Design cultivates creative expression, and Computing equips students with essential digital literacy skills. The curriculum aims to provide a comprehensive and engaging educational experience for all children.
